UNICEF is a champion of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, they advocate for governments to protect and promote the rights of every child. The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child is a universally agreed set of non-negotiable standards and obligations, built on varied legal systems and cultural traditions. These basic standards – also called human rights- set minimum entitlements and freedoms that should be respected by all governments. The convention has 54 articles in total.

The UNICEF rights are based on principles of equality, dignity, respect, non-discrimination and participation. The RRSA seeks to put the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child at the heart of a school’s ethos and culture to improve well-being and develop every child’s talent and ability to their full potential.

At Dame Ellen Pinsent School we promote and support the rights of children and the UNICEF children’s rights are interweaved into many aspects of our school life. We model this in our relationships between adults and pupils and in our determination to hear and understand our pupils’ voices and communication.

We have a group of Rights Respecting Rangers, led by our Teaching Assistant Marie Costello, and they meet regularly to share their views, discuss our values and implement change to help improve the climate for learning. Every Friday we have a Right’s Respecting assembly where one of the articles is addressed and discussed and we celebrate and acknowledge important days, such as World Water Day, International Women’s Day and Anti-Bullying week. More information on the UNICEF articles can be found by clicking this link Article of the Week - Rights Respecting Schools Award.
