Reading at dame Ellen Pinsent School

At our school, we recognise that reading is the gateway to communication, understanding and learning opportunities across the curriculum. For our children, reading takes many forms including:
We are committed to ensuring that every child, regardless of their need or ability, is given the opportunity to develop the foundations of reading in a way that is meaningful and accessible to them.
At Dame Ellen we provided the children with a variety of reading opportunities that meet their needs and academic abilities. These include:
Reading across the Curriculum

Phonics And Early Reading

Phonics is taught daily in each
Pathway. This is tailored to meet the needs of the children and will look
different within each class.
At Dame Ellen we use the Read Write Inc Scheme to support the teaching and learning of reading for or children. Read Write Inc is taught twice weekly for all children.
Below is the fully inclusive Reading Scheme designed to meet the needs of all children at Dame Ellen

Home Reading

At Dame Ellen we encourage home
reading as this play a vital role in helping children to develop a love of
reading, language, and communication. We encourage families to share a book in
a range of ways that suit the needs of the children, including looking at
pictures, being read to, sensory elements, reading aloud or listening to visual
or audio stories.
ALL children will take home a
reading book matched to their reading ability each week. If a child is not yet
‘reading’ they will choose a high quality picture book to share and enjoy.
Our Library

At Dame Ellen Pinsent School we are very lucky to have our
own Library. The children will visit the library on a weekly basis with their
class. It is also used to support children that may need a calm and quiet space
to regulate through transition times. The library contains a wide range of
books that engage the children and celebrate that love of reading.
The library offers a wide range of fiction and non-fiction texts. We acknowledge that our children engage with stories and texts in a variety of ways, so our library offers a range of resources including board books, noisy books, familiar character books, picture books, story sacks and the use of audio stories.
